Description
Piamio armchair in wood, two-tone, curved with armrest.
With the Paimio armchair, Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto achieved the perfect balance between abstraction, tradition and natural influences.
The Paimio armchair, designed in 1931, is one of Alvar Aalto's best-known designer pieces. He created this "accessory of architecture", as he himself called his furniture, for the recreation rooms of the Paimio lung sanatorium in south-western Finland, which he had planned. The armchair, which was revolutionary in terms of both design and ergonomics, allowed the patients of the sanatorium to adopt an optimal posture in which they could breathe in complete relaxation and enjoy the sun's rays. The comfortable armchair quickly became the sanatorium's flagship product, which is why it is still known worldwide today under the name Paimio.
