MARCEL BREUER

Marcel Lajos ("Lajkó") Breuer (* May 21, 1902 in Pécs, Austria-Hungary; † July 1, 1981 in New York City) was a German-American architect and designer of Hungarian-Jewish origin who is considered the inventor of modern tubular steel furniture.

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Breuer worked for several years in Walter Gropius' office before setting up his own business. In 1933, he fled Nazi Germany due to his Jewish origins and moved to the USA via Hungary and London. There, together with Gropius, he built up the architecture faculty at Harvard University.
